What an incredible weekend for St Cocas at the 123.ie Athletics Ireland juvenile championships.
Having battled through the Leinster championships over a month ago St Cocas had 7 qualifiers to the weekends championships in Athlone.
Matthew Murray won his first ever all Ireland medal with a new pb in the u15 Long jump. He had finished 4th in Leinster but hard work over the past few weeks saw him leap into the medal winning BRONZE .
Garbhan Prendergast also had a new pb in the u12 600m where he finished 9th in a packed field. Matthew Ennis was competing in u15 800m which was divided into 2 time trials. After a very fast 400m he faded a bit but finished strongly. Caoimhe Farrell won her u18 200m heat but just missed out on a final spot. Rory Pope also has a good run in the u18 200m.
Day 2 started early. Maya Rus was on the long jump runway in the u12 just before 10am. A terrific competition with 4 young girls out jumping each other in the rounds only cm's between them. In round 5 Maya leapt to massive 4.52 beating the old championship record of 4.47 from 2012. GOLD medal
The 60m sprints were up in the afternoon. Maya again worked her way through the u12 heats. The clock stopping at 8.24 as she won her heat. This also broke the old mark of 8.35 which stood since 2013. Time for a rest before the final.
Meanwhile Mia Mujadin running u15 60m came 3rd in her heat also a pb and Caoimhe Farrell 2nd in the u18 also qualifying for the final and Rory Pope a new pb in the u18 60m.
5pm and after a long day the finals started with u12 girls. A terrific race. Maya got a great start and after an amazing 8.18 seconds another championship record won GOLD . The quality of the race saw the two girls just behind her run big pb's also. Caoimhe came 6th in her final.
The performances of the athletes are coming from a lot of hard work by the coaches and the athletes themselves. Congratulations to everyone involved.
